Vintage No. 11 Canvas

Our thick cotton canvas is carefully finished over time and with great effort using the high-level batch dyeing and weaving techniques passed down for generations in the Enshu region. This process ensures that the natural texture of the natural materials is preserved.

By thoroughly permeating the core of the yarn with dye, the inherent softness of the cotton is enhanced, resulting in a thick, firm, yet soft fabric with a natural, warm, and rustic texture.

Natural Texture Born from Traditional Dyeing Techniques

"Vintage No. 11 Canvas" is made from tightly woven thick cotton yarn, carefully finished over time and with great effort using the advanced batch dyeing and weaving techniques passed down for generations in the Enshu region, without compromising the natural texture of the material.

To give you an idea, it has a substantial weight, similar to about 12 oz denim.

Coloration Thoroughly Permeating the Core of the Yarn

Natural fabric is typically treated with chemicals (mercerization) to ensure even dyeing and a clean finish without color inconsistencies. However, this pre-treatment can weaken the yarn and prevent it from developing a natural texture.

Therefore, "Vintage No. 11 Canvas" is finished without mercerization, allowing the dye to thoroughly permeate the core of the thick yarn over time to bring out the natural characteristics of the cotton material.

Crafted with Care by Skilled Artisans

Kiji no Mori fabrics are created through the skilled techniques and intuition of artisans in Hamamatsu, who are experts in natural fibers, focusing on texture, surface finish, and dyeing techniques.

Vintage Processing

Kiji no Mori's vintage processing does not involve post-treatment to create a vintage-like unevenness or texture. Instead, to preserve the natural texture of the natural material, the fabric (greige goods) is dyed over a full night through a non-continuous manual process of reactive cold batch dyeing, allowing it to slowly react and dye without applying excessive additives. This dyeing method, which is highly sensitive to temperature and humidity, and requires a long dyeing time and precise color matching, is intentionally chosen to achieve a naturally vibrant color on thick, heavy fabrics.

*This differs from post-treatments such as bio-washing or washer processing, which create vintage-like wrinkles and unevenness.

Vintage No. 11 Canvas: Nurture It for Years to Come

"Vintage No. 11 Canvas" starts with the natural texture of cotton yarn and is designed to develop scuffs and rubs with years of use, eventually aging into a true vintage canvas. While there may be no visible changes at first, we encourage you to take your time and nurture it.

Handling "Vintage No. 11 Canvas"

Needles and Thread

・Seaming: Sewing machine needle No. 11-14, Sewing machine thread No. 60
・For prominent stitching: Sewing machine needle No. 16, Sewing machine thread No. 30

 Caution
The fabric is tightly woven and dense.
While it is possible to sew with a domestic sewing machine, it may be difficult depending on the machine's specifications, so please consider your sewing methods in advance.

Creases from Folding

Typically, fabric is packaged in a folded state.
If folding creases are noticeable, they can be smoothed out with an iron.
・Set the iron to medium heat and use steam.
・Iron from the reverse side; when ironing the front, always use a pressing cloth.
・After ironing, lay the fabric flat and allow it to cool before use.

 Caution
Applying a hot iron too strongly directly can damage the fibers and cause marks (whitening).
Leaving the fabric folded for a long period can cause the creased areas to fade from sun exposure and create marks.
Please note that sun-induced marks cannot be removed with an iron.

Fabric Shrinkage

The fabric is already processed, so it can be used as is.
However, natural fibers may shrink slightly when washed with water due to their inherent properties.
・Shrinkage rate for No. 11 Vintage Canvas: Approximately 5% in the warp direction. Since shrinkage will occur in the warp direction, please account for this shrinkage when washing with water after tailoring.

Pre-washing and Washing

"Vintage No. 11 Canvas" does not undergo any post-processing such as sizing, paraffin treatment (waxing), or water-repellent treatment.
Its thickness, strength, and natural stiffness are achieved solely through its high weave density, making it suitable for pre-washing and water washing.

Whether to pre-wash: Pre-washing is not always necessary. Please decide based on the item and purpose.

 Caution
・When pre-washing (preparing the fabric), always do so separately.
Washing multiple colored fabrics together may cause color transfer.
・After soaking in plenty of water for about 1-2 hours, gently wring it out, smooth it flat to prevent excessive wrinkles, and dry it in the shade.
・Be careful not to rub or scrub vigorously when the fabric is wet, as this may leave white marks.
・For ironing after preparing the fabric, iron when semi-dry, following the instructions under [Creases from Folding] above. Please note that we cannot be held responsible for any issues arising from fabric preparation (preparing, pre-washing) or sewing.
