No. 11 Canvas Vintage

No. 11 Canvas Vintage

This tightly woven fabric made from thick cotton yarn is meticulously crafted using the advanced techniques of batch dyers, a tradition long inherited in the Enshu region. The process is time-consuming and labor-intensive to preserve the natural texture of the natural material.

By thoroughly permeating the dye deep into the core of the yarn, the inherent softness of the cotton is enhanced. This fabric is characterized by its natural, warm, and rustic texture, with a thick and firm yet soft and resilient feel.

Natural Texture Born from Traditional Dyeing Techniques

"No. 11 Canvas Vintage" is a tightly woven fabric made from thick cotton yarn, meticulously crafted using the advanced techniques of batch dyers, a tradition long inherited in the Enshu region, to preserve the natural texture of the natural material. The process is time-consuming and labor-intensive.

To compare it to denim, it has a substantial weight of approximately 12 oz.

Color Developed by Deep Penetration into the Core

Generally, natural fabrics undergo chemical treatment (mercerization) to ensure even dyeing and prevent unevenness, resulting in a beautiful and efficient finish. However, this pretreatment can thin the yarn, preventing the development of a natural texture.

Therefore, "No. 11 Canvas Vintage" is not mercerized. Instead, to maximize the inherent qualities of the cotton, the dye is slowly and deeply permeated into the core of the thick yarn over time to develop its color and achieve its finish.

Craftsmen's Skills Carefully Create Each Piece

Kijinomori's fabrics are created through the skilled techniques and intuition of artisans who are knowledgeable about natural fibers, cultivated in the local Hamamatsu region, in terms of creating texture, achieving desired surface appearance, and dyeing techniques.

Fabric Manufacturing Scene

Vintage Processing

Kijinomori's vintage processing does not involve post-processing to create a vintage-like unevenness or texture. Instead, to preserve the natural texture of the natural material, the raw fabric (kibata) is not subjected to unnecessary additives. It is dyed using a cold batch dyeing method with reactive dyes, through a non-continuous manual process, allowing it to slowly react and dye overnight. This deliberate use of a dyeing method that is sensitive to temperature and humidity, and requires a long dyeing time, makes color matching difficult. However, it results in a thick, coarse-count fabric with a natural texture and excellent color development.

*This is different from post-processing such as bio-washing or washer processing that creates vintage-like wrinkles and unevenness.

Handling of "No. 11 Canvas Vintage"

About needles and thread

・Seam: Sewing machine needle No. 11-14, sewing machine thread No. 60
・When emphasizing stitches: Sewing machine needle No. 16, sewing machine thread No. 30

 Caution
The fabric has a high weave density and tightly packed fibers.
While it is possible to sew with a domestic sewing machine, it may be difficult depending on the machine's specifications, so please consider your sewing methods in advance.

About fold creases

Fabric is usually packed in a folded state.
If fold creases are noticeable, they can be smoothed out with an iron.
・Iron temperature should be medium, and use steam.
・Iron from the reverse side. When ironing the front, always use a pressing cloth.
・After ironing, lay the fabric flat and allow it to cool before use.

 Caution
Applying high heat with an iron directly and too forcefully can damage the fibers and cause marks (whitening).
If left folded for a long period, the creased areas may fade due to sun exposure and leave marks.
Please note that sun-induced marks cannot be removed by ironing.

About fabric shrinkage

The fabric is already processed, so it can be used as is.
However, natural fibers have a tendency to shrink slightly when washed with water due to their material properties.
・Shrinkage rate of No. 11 Canvas Vintage: Approximately 5% in the warp direction. As shrinkage occurs in the warp direction, please account for this shrinkage when washing with water after tailoring.

About pre-washing and washing

"No. 11 Canvas Vintage" does not undergo any post-processing such as sizing, paraffin treatment (waxing), or water repellent treatment.
It achieves its thickness and strong durability solely through the density of its weave, and is finished with a natural stiffness, so it can be pre-washed and washed with water.

Necessity of pre-washing: Pre-washing is not always necessary. Please decide based on the item and purpose.

 Caution
・When pre-washing (preparing the fabric), always do it separately.
Washing multiple colored fabrics together may cause color transfer.
・After soaking in sufficient water for about 1-2 hours, gently wring it out, flatten it to prevent excessive wrinkles, and hang it to dry in the shade.
・Be careful, as strong rubbing or scrubbing while wet may leave white marks.
・For ironing after preparing the fabric, iron from a semi-dry state following the instructions under [About fold creases] above. Please note that we cannot be held responsible for any defects caused by fabric preparation (preparing the fabric, pre-washing) or sewing.
